Owen Wister was born on July 14, 1860, in Germantown, a neighborhood in the northwestern part of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Owen Jones Wister, was a wealthy physician raised at Grumblethorpe in Germantown. He was a distant cousin of Sally Wister.

His greatest success came in 1902 with the publication of The Virginian, which was a bestseller for months and would be dramatized and filmed numerous times.

The first of its kind, Wister’s The Virginian is a prototypical western novel that has inspired readers and authors for over a century. Detailing the exploits of a gunslinger known solely as the Virginian.
