The Scottish Chiefsby Miss Jane Porter.
The Scottish Chiefsby Miss Jane Porter. Wallace made no difficulty in granting Monteith's request; and, therebeing two iron rings on each side of his charge, the young chief tookoff his leathern belt, and putting it through them, swung the boxeasily under his left arm, while covering it with his plaid. Monteith's eyes now brightened-the paleness left his cheek-and with afirmer step, as if suddenly relieved of a heavy load, he called aservant to prepare Sir William Wallace's attendants.
Miss Jane Porter wrote this book in 1809 but it is still an exciting and heroic story of The Scottish Chiefs, men and women, who attempted to drive the English occupying soldiers and their warrior king, Edward I of England, hero of the Crusades, out of Scotland. William Wallace, the valiant Murray, and many others and their deeds fill the pages.
This book by Jane Porter tells the story of Scotland and its hero William Wallace. It was a moving, dramatic, incredible tale. I had never heard of the book or even of Wallace himself when I was in school. Mel Gibson's Braveheart was my introduction to this period of Scottish history. Porter's book explained things in much more detail and made the hero seem nearly too perfect to be real. But he was real, and his story was real.
