Coining the term "megalopolis", it was an early warning against urban conglomeration and exploitation of the natural environment, and so was a precursor of the famous Church of England report Faith in the City (1985). In retirement from 1985, Verney was saddened by the pressures for narrowness and judgmentalism within the Anglican communion, and used his linguistic skills for a sharp critique of fundamentalism in all faiths.
