I have several of Jan Messent’s books and I like them all, especially the one on Anglo-Saxon embroidery and the Bayeux Tapestry book. However I too was a bit disappointed in this one. Not only are the points raised by you, Mary, apposite but I found that the actual work wasn’t really up to her usual standard and in some places looked downright amateur. I feel bad criticising someone like Jan Messent but honesty is my middle name. If Trish Burr were to write a book about embroidering faces I would, as I said in another post in another place, be ‘in like Flynn’.

Jan Messent takes a traditional art form and puts a new slant on it by producing fascinating portraits in stitch. She explains the best materials and methods for stitching both clothing and faces to create real characters. She has been inspired by a host of historical characters, such as Bess of Hardwick and also dips into fantasy with a 'book box' which opens to show Cinderella and Prince Charming. The faces appear in relief and Jan Messent shows how to develop the 3D qualities transforming flat drawings into realistic modelled forms.
