The crime, which was originally reported on the front page of the "New York Times," is a modern tale of caste and class; love and rage; differing sexual mores; the intervention of the Catholic Church; and the dilemma of psychiatry's place in the modern courtroom.

'The Yale Murder'' by Peter Meyer, a journalist, is a ''true narrative'' told in the Vincent Bugliosi-Thomas Thompson mode. In fact, though ''The Yale Murder'' is a less challenging book than Dr. Gaylin's, it is often more satisfying. Except for an occasional attack of bad taste - for example, he says that Richard's ''skin was tinted olive, but in a way that looked more like he had just completed a two-hour sunbath than taken a dip in the Hispanic genetic pool'' -it's an admirable book.
Meyer has also won journalism awards from the University of Missouri and the Robert Kennedy Foundation for his reporting and writing for such national publications as Harper's, Vanity Fair, New York, Life, Time and People.
