During certain periods of his life he was also a soldier and a Roman Catholic priest

Whereas Lope's strength lay in the sponteneity and naturalness of his work, Calderón's Pedro Calderón de la Barca y Henao was a dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age. Calderón initiated what has been called the second cycle of Spanish Golden Age theatre. Whereas his predecessor, Lope de Vega, pioneered the dramatic forms and genres of Spanish Golden Age theatre, Calderón polished and perfected them.

Pedro Calderón de la Barca, (born January 17, 1600, Madrid, Spain-died May 25, 1681, Madrid), dramatist and poet who succeeded Lope de Vega as the greatest Spanish playwright of the Golden Age. Among his best-known secular dramas are El médico de su honra (1635; The Surgeon of His Honour ), La vida es sueño (1635; Life Is a Dream ), El alcalde de Zalamea ( c. 1640; The Mayor of Zalamea ), and La hija del aire (1653; The Daughter of the Air ), sometimes considered his masterpiece. He also wrote operas and plays with religious or mythological themes.

Pedro Calderón de la Barca was born in Madrid, Spain on January 17, 1600. He wrote more than 120 plays and over 70 allegorical religious plays with subjects from mythology and the Old and the New Testaments. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Madrid. He was a dramatist, poet and writer of the Spanish Golden Age. Calderón's debut as a playwright was Amor, Honor y Poder, performed at the Royal Palace. His other plays include La Selva Confusa, Los Macabeos, El Magico Prodigioso, El Alcalde de Zalamea, La Vida Es Sueno, and La Estatua de Prometeo.

This volume brings together four long out-of-print Honig translations: Secret Vengeance for Secret Insult, Devotion to the Cross, The Phantom Lady, and The Mayor of Zalamea, joined by the ever popular Life is a Dream and the newly translated, never before published version of The Crown of Absalom.
