Carr's call for a more inclusive approach to history is remarkable. In my opinion, his alarming warning on the parochialism prevalent in Britain greatly improved the perception of other peoples and cultures in the English-speaking world. The book is also completely biased in Carr's own skewed humanist liberal image of progress through reform, and the subjetive nature of the historian's viewpoint. It is packed with vignettes, riffs and intellectual trinkets, carefully outlying a consideration of what is history - how does causation work?

Edward C. Carr begins his book with a question: “But is there any need, or a valid reason, for another remembrance or memoir of the war years?”

I believe there are multitude reasons for the large number of books covering our Civil War and World War II. The numbers of our citizens who were involved in both wars is enormous. And so were casualties. This is not to discount the lives lost or the number of people involved in other wars the United States fought in because those people were as profoundly affected as any others. A big difference though, to my way of thinking, is that a lot of these wars, like the ones in Korea and Vietnam happened without the sacrifice and contributions of the civil population demanded by the War Between the States and World War II. The lack of demands upon non-combatants have helped to keep these other conflicts out of public imagination.

But is there a need for yet another book about the Second World War? Is there a valid reason to justify another remembrance? I think so. Because there are still untold stories that need to be told and there are still people who’s contributions need to be acknowledged. Over 16 million men and women from the United States served in WWII and they are now dying at a rate of 1000/day. Some have never voiced their stories to family or friends and others have waited until strangers, like me, have asked them to open up at last.

For the vets of World War II, I suspect they feel as Edward Carr does. In his memoir of captaining a B-17 during the war he writes, “The history of the 20th Century is anchored in the war years, 1940 through 1945."
