Charles Burns’s Black Hole is a strange and somewhat disturbing graphic novel depicting some teens engaging in drinking, smoking pot, and sexual acts.

Suburban Seattle, the mid-1970s  . Charles Burns’s Black Hole is a strange and somewhat disturbing graphic novel depicting some teens engaging in drinking, smoking pot, and sexual acts. Ho hum, eh? It is also one of the best graphic novels and novels of any kind of the new century. If a black hole is the effect of gravity pulling so hard on a site in space that light cannot get out, the black hole of this particular summer of sex and drugs looks at times like it is a vortex you could not recover from. I Adolescence as Disease.

Black Hole is a twelve-issue comic book limited series written and illustrated by Charles Burns and published first by Kitchen Sink Press, then Fantagraphics. It was released in collected form in 2005 by Pantheon Books. The story deals with the aftermath of a sexually transmitted disease that causes grotesque mutations in teenagers. Burns has said that the mutations can be read as a metaphor for adolescence, sexual awakening and the transition into adulthood.

I read Black Hole for my graphic novel class. I had never heard of, and had no idea what to expect. I first remember reading Charles Burns in RAW magazine back in the 1980s, and his work still has the ability to unsettle even the most jaded reader

I read Black Hole for my graphic novel class. Although it doesn't have page numbers, Goodreads says it is 352 pages long. I first remember reading Charles Burns in RAW magazine back in the 1980s, and his work still has the ability to unsettle even the most jaded reader. Whether it is the stark black and white drawings (which have the feel of an alien woodcut) or the topics (which take the alienation of teenagers and misfits seriously, without a wink or a nudge) it is hard to read Burns without being awed and horrified in equal measure.

I honestly got confused with this plot, which isn't something I can say about a lot of novels. This may have been, in part, because of the fact that two male characters (and even the main female character) all looked alike - they all had black shoulder length hair with short bangs.

Black Hole is presented as a supposedly autobiographical novel. The glum, dysfunctional mood is enhanced by Burns's drawing style. The book is in black and white throughout, the blacks deeply, heavily inked, the whites barely relieved by tiny patches of shading. It was originally published serially as a comic, and 10 years of labour went into its making. So thick is the blackness that the book gives off a strong odour of printer's ink, a sour smell, faintly reminiscent of undried glossy paint.

Charles Burns: With Black Hole, and with this book as well, there was a skeletal outline

Charles Burns: With Black Hole, and with this book as well, there was a skeletal outline. I mean, there’s a complexity, and if I want to have an important image that shows up early and doesn’t get resolved until much later in the book, I need to figure out how that’s going to work. Like in Black Hole-plot threads that get introduced early on don’t get resolved until the middle of the book. Front cover of Black Hole 1997 How do you feel about having the first part of this story released when you still have so much more work to do? Will the response to the first episode have any bearing on where you go from here in terms of the story?
