It is a good book that could give you quick introduction/review on basic concepts of physical oceanography like potential density, temperature, Brunt-väisälä frequency, wind-driven surface currents, thermohaline circulation...The chapters about surface currents and deep circulation are succint and well-written, although more info/comments on the role of overturning circulation on climate should be mentioned. Throughout the text, math equations are clear and easy to follow. However one thing might be worth to consider is that this book is more on the descriptive side. If you wish to learn more about dynamical aspect of physical oceanography, look for another book.

Last but not least, this book goes with a decent price (just compare it with Lynne D. Talley's, for example

Got quite a surprise reading my book the other day. In the newest version of this book, page 56 is blank. In fact, several people told the professor in the class I'm using this book in about this, and it turns out nearly everyone who purchased the latest version of the book found the same thing. He wound up having to photocopy pg 56 out of an older version of the book and hand it out to us.

Outside of that, there's nothing wrong, but, just a heads up to anyone wanting to read *all* of chapter 3!

This intro to physical oceanography is both approachable and easy-to-read, just like a good intro should be. I would recommend this text to anyone who wants to learn more about what drives ocean circulation. Potential readers should be beware that physical oceanography is, at its core, a quantitative science and this text reflects this. If you really want to follow the text, be prepared to break out your calculus book, a pencil and some paper.

This is a very old book but it gives a very good introduction for people who are not familiar with the field. The explanations are very detailed.

I didn't expect this book to still be in a very good condition, but it is! Thanks! Now I can sit down and read some hard core oceanography stuff.

Though I'm not an oceanographer, I found Knauss's introduction to the topic to be excellent. The book covers just physical oceanography, so if you're interested in marine ecology, chemical oceanography, or marine geology, you'd best look elsewhere. Overall, it's fascinating to learn how small differences in salinity, temperature, and density drive so much of the dynamics of the Earth's oceans. Knauss does a good job with his derivations. The chapters discussing heat transfer, the conservation equations, and the equations of motion are excellent and illustrative. His discussion of waves is also good. Owing to the complexity of the topics, his discussion of tides and sound is weakest. But anyone looking for an accessible and readable text on physical oceanography with many useful derivations can start here. (Note that Knauss helped create NOAA and later served as its administrator.) Recommended.
