The Audobon book is a great starter book, and not only contains information on particular bird species, but also has great information on bird behavior and things you can do to encourge more visitors to your yard. I have enjoyed this book so much I just purchased it as a Christmas gift for my sister who is new to birdwatching also.

The Birds of America is a book by naturalist and painter John James Audubon, containing illustrations of a wide variety of birds of the United States. It was first published as a series in sections between 1827 and 1838, in Edinburgh and London.

Accompanied by an audio CD containing a variety of bird calls and songs, a colorful study of the birds of the world profiles more than 1,500 avian species, photographed in their native environment and featuring information on bird behavior and characteristics, tips on prime bird-watching locations, and facts about bird anatomy, life cycles, and conservation.
