To a fair degree she succeeds, but not entirely. The incidents she depicts in the book are (mostly) interesting, and the topics covered are broad, but Prager seems to feel the need to begin and end every chapter (and many sub-sections) with some variation of "Science is exciting.

This is an engaging collection of snippets about the author and others engaged in the pursuit of science, knowledge about the sea, and field work. Interspersed among these vignettes are gentle pleas for public understanding of the importance of science, field work, and support for basic and applied research. All of the writing is in a casual, personal style that is free of jargon or pretense. It is as if the author sat down with you over a cup of coffee to swap tales about the life of a scientist. The book will interest students, professionals, and anyone interested generally in science or the oceans. The author describes some amazing experiences from a diversity of marine environments. Her travels and experiences are amazing in their breadth. The author conveys a sense of the wonder and excitement of scientific research and discovery. She also describing some of the tedium and difficulty of such pursuits. After having read the book, you have a sense that you have gotten to know her.

"Chasing Science" is a relatively short, yet informative look at the world of marine science. Covering oceanography, geology, marine biology and other lesser known sciences, the book provides a feel for the life of a marine scientist. It is well written and very easy to read, but is lacking in depth. It consists mainly of very short stories of what can be expected if you enter the world of marine science. There are a few facts, but do not expect great detail.

If you are expecting moderate or heavy science from this book, you will be disappointed. The book, however, works well as an introductory look at the world of marine science and I would highly recommend it to non scientists and to students who may be interested in making marine science a career.

My young son is interested in oceanography and science - we found this book to be an excellent behind the scenes look at life as a scientist and researcher doing fieldwork. The collection of short anecdotal stories were a perfect format for a young mind to wrap his brain around in one sitting. It seems to me this book would be a great start for the Animal Planet Cable Channel's next reality science show.

Many of the research, places and events described in the book provided an excellent segway to do further father-son Web research and investigation. Next stop, Googling and YouTubing the author! (Check back with this review in 15 years to see what long term effect the book had on my son's education - he's only 7 now!)

Dangerous

There really isn't much in this book. The author recounts all sorts of stuff about the sea she and her colleagues have experienced in the field in these short sections. The only things I found interesting were the stuff about sharks and the undersea habitat Aquarius. The rest was often just a bunch of words strung together. Oh, and serendipity was evidently her word of the day. The book includes black-and-white photographs that really should have been in color, a list of websites, recommended and related reading, and no index. It killed time so I guess it served its purpose.

although i'm a scuba diver and have enjoyed many hours under the sea, nothing can compare to the stories of dr prager in this captivating account of her many adventures above and below the sea
the stories of living in the undersea habitat were especially enthralling

Interesting read, wish the science papers that the stories were about were written as readable.

What a wonderful little book! Very accessible; very enlightening.
The sea stories--all by ocean scientists--are engaging and often quite humorous. They share important knowledge about the ocean, but also the unexpected ways much of that knowledge is gained.
The stories include scientists SCUBA diving, sailing, making long cruises on research ships, and living for days underwater. They give a great sense not only of the results, but of the unique challenges for scientists working in the ocean environment, and the importance of them continuing to do so.
