In the Introduction to this 1980 book (revised in 1990), Jim Mason wrote, "this book is not intended to be an attack on farmers and the people who run factory farms. I am familiar with farm people and the feelings they have about making a living from their land. They are buffeted by economic developments that force them to try to push their animals to greater and greater productivity.
Jim Mason and Peter Singer are two of the best sources for books on animal rights. It was appalling to read what happens to animals that are being raised for slaughter. Some of this book is difficult to stomach. Strong feelings for animals have driven the course of my life. From the age of 5, when I rescued baby mice from the barn and kept them warm in a shoe box behind the kitchen stove, to today’s work of getting funding to grassroots groups working for animals in rural areas, helping animals has been my joy and my passion. It all began as a child on a Missouri farm and it feeds me today as a writer and attorney in big cities back East.
