As a novice rat owner, I had been searching for an informative and easy to read book that explained the basic through intermediate-advanced care of my rats. I saw this book in a pet store for $20.00, and knew I could get it on Amazon.com for at least half the price for a brand new copy, so that's what I did.
The book is not only easy to read, it has TONS of photographs, descriptions of how to best care for your pet rat(s), and what to do in emergencies. He covers diet, exercise, & baths (yes, rats love the water, and also dust baths). He also answers general questions at the end of each chapter in a Q and A format from people who have had frequently asked questions that I certainly might feel silly asking as a novice rat owner.
This book made me feel more at ease about introducing a new rat into my group of rats, and I am in the process of doing so, and so far, by following his directions, it's going quite well.
I would recommend this book not only for the novice rat owner, but for the seasoned rat owner as well. He gives many good points on housing and recreation for these extremely smart creatures that makes entertaining and owning them much more fun than a challenge. My Rat (My Pet)

This book is very VERY informational, and easy to read. My daughter (12 yrs) can read it well and is not unsure of any words, or confused. This book also has A LOT of information about EVERYTHING, and has helped us understand a lot as we are planning to get rats. It is a lot of information and all of it is very useful, so I suggest take notes on whatever you can in this book. I am SO HAPPY with this and DEFINITELY rate it a 5/5 because it is set up good so it is easy to read, informational, has lots of good pictures, and it also arrived on time and in EXTREMELY good condition even though I bought it used. There was only ONE page that was dog-eared, but no pen marks, crinkled pages, and the cover was also looked brand new. I am definitely going to keep this book always incase I have an emergency or need help with my rats.

The habitats in this books are a rat's paradise, although they seem a little impractical for most rat owners. Also have you noticed almost all the photos are of baby rats?

However, the worst part of this book is the health section where there is a lot of wrong info. For instance, if a rat appears ill, he recommends isolating her, and waiting for a day or two to record the symptoms. This could result in a dead rat. Lethargy or refusing food is especially dangerous and needs to be treated immediately. Also, taking a rat away from her roommates is a big stressor. The other rats have already been exposed to whatever the cause is anyway. If you follow his directions and treat a wound with alcohol, chances are your rat is going to bite you! There is so much wrong information in the book I can't list it all here. I plan to post a detailed review on my website at ratfanclub.org

I'm an extremely visual person, this book was incredible for that. It is well sectioned and offers great insight to pet rat handling. For the price, it is a very good reference and accessible for young and old readers.
