I'm studying garden design and I need to learn about different plants, can anyone tell me of a book that describes plants (with pictures) and where they grow best. I'm mainly looking at native species in the UK. Ideally it would have a type of plant on each page, and would be handy as a reference guide. For use of natives in garden design, my favourite is 'English Plants for your Garden' by Jill, Duchess of Hamilton, Penny Hart and John Simmons. For all-round identification of garden plants, I would go for the two-volume set of 'The Botanic Garden' by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix.

In the book English Plants for Your Garden, Jill, Duchess of Hamilton, recommends planting them along with white-flowered natives such as sweet woodruff and wild strawberry and shade-lovers such as Solomon’s seal and lily of the valley. Another good idea is to mix ferns with white-flowered wild garlic.
