Edward Coverley Kennedy (31 August 1879 – 23 November 1939) was a Royal Navy sailor who is remembered as the captain of the armed merchant cruiser HMS Rawalpindi who engaged the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Edward Coverley Kennedy was born on 31 August 1879 and entered the Royal Navy as a naval cadet in 1892. Beginning his career in HMS Britannia, he first served at sea in 1894, rising to midshipman in 1895 and serving in that capacity in the China Station.

Peter L. N. Padfield (born 1932) is a British author, biographer, historian, and journalist who specializes in naval history and in the Second World War period. His early journalism appeared under the name P. L. Padfield. As well as his non-fiction work, he has also published four novels. Born in British India, Padfield attended a well-known boarding school for boys, Christ's Hospital, then trained for a naval career as a Royal Naval Reserve cadet on HMS Worcester.
