If it wasn’t true, Wildfire Loose: The Week Maine Burned would make a good science fiction tale. I knew that Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert Island burned badly in 1947, but I did not know the devastating fires spread throughout the state, terrorizing Mainers, exhausting fire fighters, wiping out entire communities. Glad I wasn’t born until 1948! A severe drought set the stage for this tragedy, which was ignited, in many places, by carelessly tossed cigarettes. This is an excellent historically accurate book on the wild fires that burned throughout the State of Maine in 1947. It is compelling and hard to put down. In fact, it is probably my first memory.

My Dad help fight this fire as did two more of his brothers and several uncles. My Mom worked at a restaurant and they daily made huge amounts of sandwiches, cookies and coffee for those fighting the devastating massive fires. It is a tribute to all who helped to stop this devastating fire.

I was 6 years old in Baldwin which was mostly spared by the fire. I remember for at least a week everything from the farmhouse that would fit was one large 5 ton borrowed stake bodytruck in the driveway, ready to run. Other furniture was "hidden" in a 5 foot high culvert in nearby Polly brook. The fire never came and all was saved...

This book was excellent. The author conducted interviews with people who remembered the details of that frightening week in Maine. She also included information from several newspapers regarding what was going on. I was 13 years old when it happened (in 1947) and saw (from a train) only a small piece of the evidence of the burning. Radio reports gave us a good deal of information, of course, but I was too young to realize the full extent of the destruction.

This book was written in such a way as to catch the urgency of all that was happening, the speed with which the fires moved, and the feelings of the people who were losing some or all of what they owned. It also showed the spirit of the Maine people who jumped in to help each other without question. As you can see, I was impressed!

This is an excellent historically accurate book on the wild fires that burned throughout the State of Maine in 1947. It is compelling and hard to put down. In fact, it is probably my first memory. I was 3 years old and remember well my mother holding me up to look at the sky in the south which was all red from these devastating fires. I have bought several of these books for gifts.

Great read, brought to my attention that Bar Harbor was not the only community that suffered terrible loses of its homes and buildings in that terrible fire season.
