In this collection of short essays, Wood invites us to visit the area for a while. We walk alongside him, and we help to paddle his canoe. Fairly soon we realize that the man's got a subtle sense of humor. The sign on his outhouse even reads "The Church of Peace. He also has an easy-going, casual style of storytelling. His quick monologues cover such topics as fishing, boating, camping, splitting wood, and even feeding cat food to a wild fox.

Sparkle Island is a fantastic book which reminds us that in todays world of constantly shifting workplaces,homes, relationships or whatever, that the most important things cannot be bought for any price. Family life is the one true thing that needs to be cherished and I feel honored to be an observer into this author's family.
Not only are readers allowed a glimpse into an obviously warm and loving family, we are allowed to experience cottage life, with all of its charms. The sense of closeness they share and experience at the cottage almost convinces the reader Ja-Ma-Ca has magical qualities, which indeed it may have!
I have traveled around somewhat and still have many places I yearn to visit but now Walloon Lake is on my list. I long to collect a Petoskey stone, to eat planked whitefish, to go for a boat ride on the lake, and most of all to play petanque! Read this book and share it with others. You won't be disappointed, especially if you have a cottage or have summered at one.

Every detail of cottage life is described in such a way that the reader can't help but want to plan a vacation to Walloon Lake or a reasonable facsimile. This book should be in every family and vacation cottage on earth, if only to inspire others to record and remember their family history.

For a died in the wool Buckeye, it was hard to imagine that a book about a place in that State up North that we all love to hate could be so warm and wonderful. Ellen Rosewall's special spirit and keen insights, however, clearly illuminate the joys of love, life and Wallon Lake. Being invited to share her obviously close, loving and spiritual family in such an intimate way, made Sparkle Island a truely heart warming experience!

Sparkle Island is a wonderfully crafted, winsome revery of summer. The stories evoke summers from my childhood and gave a West Coast gal a taste of mid-west wonders. This read aloud book had me alternately howling (Bats, And a boat is....) and touched by the sweetness of shared family treasures. Our first read of this wonderful book of essays was on a boat. We joined Ellen Rosewall's family as we drifted through our own Sparkle Islands. Read this book aloud to everyone!

This book captured the special feelings about Walloon Lake that only one who had spent all one's life there could know. I was surprised to see that Ms. Rosewall was not closer to my age (63) as she enjoyed so many of the places that I did, which unfortunately are no longer there. One of the reviewers compared it to Lake Woebegon, but to me, there is no such similarity. I still feel the same way about the lake when we visit. The lake itself is a memory bank.

This book pulled me in from the first glance. I started reading the forward, read it to my husband, and we both wanted to sit down and read it! When I finally did get a chance to sit down and take it in, it was hard to put down...but I'm glad I did, so I could enjoy it longer. I'll definitely read this one again, when I have a few hours to sit back, relax, and enjoy the sunshine.

For anyone who has returned to a summer place year after year "Sparkle Island" is a must. Ellen Rosewall lets us inside her own family and her own world. It is very refreshing. I visited Walloon Lake two summers ago and it was exactly the way Ellen pictured it.

From the first page to the last, my husband and I cried, laughed, sighed, remembered, and imagined -- sometimes all at the same time -- as we read this wonderful book together. Anyone who's ever known the wonder of returning year after year to a special place will immediately find themselves at home, and in love with this book.
