I am a huge McNish fan. He has such a fabulous imagination!!! One thing I enjoy about his books, is that they get very intense, very serious, and almost very scary, BUT everything works out (not to spoil any plots, I hope?) I DO NOT like to read horror stories, and these books are, but aren't. He is writing for younger, teen-age readers, and he sincerely wants them to be able to sleep at night, and not be too afraid of the dark. Safe horror.

AND, his books seem to alternate between 'boy' books, and 'girl' books. The main character(s) of each, and the perspective are in some books young men (still boys) and young women (still girls).
The 'girl' ones are just a little softer, though NOT fuzzy, and have a bit more teen-age stuff (I almost feel like I am peeking!). The 'boy' ones are scarier, for sure.

This one, The Hunting Ground is a BOY book, and it gets scary. There are some very horrible things going on and being done. I usually can read McNish books before bed, but this one, I ONLY read during the day, when the sun was shining, and almost wasn't going to finish it. Worth getting to the end, but won't spoil any of it!

This book was a great thriller but i couldn't shake off the feeling that the ending was rushed. I'd really have wanted a longer more drawn out ending rather than a real quick one. Also, the beginning seemed to be full of horror, anticipation and thrill however the more you progressed into the book, the less of it the author had. It was uneven and should had an equal proportion of thriller in it. But otherwise it was quite a well written book which is great to curl up with a hot chocolate and blanket.

This book was full of mystery and action. It was scary but not too scary for my son.
"It was full of magic and I couldn't put it down. The author created great suspense between chapters. One of my favorite characters was Theo because he was tough throughout the book and he came through at the end like a superhero."

This book is very good. coming from a 12 yr old girl i would recommend this book to ANYONE! i used this book as a book report and my teacher said it was awesome.this book is very well wrote and very enjoyable. if it held the interest of a 12 yr old girl it will hold the interest of pretty much anything. to get to the ppoint you need this book very well wrote.
