Yes, if your kid develops an infatuation with dragonflies, you have to improvise that. This is a basic curriculum to make sure that they're overall at grade level, though.
It is what it is. And it's an affordable, basic homeschool curriculum. It's enough to make sure that if your kid has to go back to "regular school" then they won't be behind in anything. What more could you want for $30?

Overall, I'm happy with the whole Learn at Home series so far (only finishing grade 2 now. Started at K.) My kid is well advanced compared to his "regular schooled" peers. Not bad for being only a few hours a day and nearly free.

This book is amazing and the quality is as if I went to a book store and bought it new. The lesson plan is so simple to follow. It is like homeschooling for dummies(HAHA. It is also fun to do with your kids very hands on for you and your child. I tried alot of different avenues for teaching my 5 children. This is definitly the one. I used Jean-Wolfe's curricullum for teaching my older kids which are now 18,19,21 years and was very sad when the were no long publishing this. (Which are now up to $260 used). So when I found this curriculum exactly the same concept but new and a very small fraction of the cost I couldn't wait for it to get here for my 6 and 8 year old. CAN YOU TELL I"M PLEASED. P.S. Unfortunately I am very picky about books that I purchase. I will pay extra money for something labeled in mint or perfect condition, even if it used. This book was labeled "good" but description read "Book is tight and square with clean pages." The clean pages part is the ONLY reason I chose this book. Upon arrival I see that the book's first 2 pages are used, and to top it off, they were written in pink INK. I cant even erase it, therefore rendering void to my child. I understand that it is ONLY 2 pages, but I feel the review should have stated "some writing in pages". I would NOT have purchased it then. This is the second time I have been "burned" with this series (different seller). The last seller of the grade one book I used, made the same comment and had the first 2 pages written in also. At least hers was in pencil and I could erase it and use it again. The seller commits to "sellers goal is satisfied customers". The best way to do that is to be 100% accurate on your listing descriptions(to the best of your ability). The rest of the book was tight and clean, but this buyer is not satisfied! :(

We really like the learn at home series as affordable curriculum (this book retails for $19.99 new, ~$5-10 used goid condition elsewhere on the web, not sure why amazons prices have been in the hundreds and thousands for it, I just bought a new one elsewhere).

Really really wished it had a supply list or book list in it for what youll need and use. Otherwise its very nice to have the curriculum planned out & just tweak or supplement per kid or if you want more classical subjects. Very well done.

You will be needing to get one orbtwo books a week from your local library or buying them to use with the curriculum. There are sdveral other supplies needed for the curriculum (nothing out of the ordinary though) so make sure to read & plan a head. In some areas the curriculum can be a little open ended, good for some, not for us. So I find myself buying supplement units occassionally with more specific worksheets and activities. Ran into this in the learn at home grade 1 curriculum also. Still the best curriculum for the retail cost we've found.

That said this book is absolutely NOT worth spending $900-$1200 on, nor even $100. It's a good series and totally worth $10-$30 (depending new or used) but into the hundreds you might as well spend the money on a full curriculum set that includes all your books, workbooks, specific supplies (like cousinaire rods) and etc all in one package for $300-$600 depending. Before I even considered spending hundreds on this we were planning to go with a $560 homeschool program that sends you the books, customises the curriculum choices to your individual child, & developes a transcript for your child (nice for if they ever go to public or private school or just to show what you've done in the future)& can help with homeschool legal issues, if they arise. Just to give those who may be new to this an idea of what $560 can buy in a homeschool curiculum, much less more! I do really like this curriculum, but part of reviewing is reviewing the worth of something and this curriculum, while great for it's original retail cost, is not worth hundreds.

This is our first year homeschooling and this was 1 of many books & workbooks I purchased. It is affordable, and covers every topic for 1 school year of study. The thing I found frustrating is, as a homeschooler, I want more flexibility to change things up. If we are going on a feild trip or my son develops a sudden ineterst in dragonflies, I want to be able to find resources on those topics. The Table of Contents only lists the pages each week starts on and there is no index, so the only way to find them in this book is to thumb through every week to see if it falls into the curriculum. It is time consuming and I find that I use this book less often with my ecclectic approach. If you are looking for a book to tell you exactly when to study what, you have found the right book! If you want to follow your instincts, environment and interests, this might not be the best resource.

Easy to follow. Gives you a clear 5 subject outline for 5 days a week/school year. Good suggestions for science and social studies assignments. Easy to follow outline for basic language skills. Presents fun ideas throughout for all subjects to break up written work. Have used k, 1st and now 2nd grade books and loved them all.

I really liked how it gave be all the info I needed and all the worked was already organized for me.

i have the complete curriculum book serries and love it more then this set its great if you want to have a set schedual lay out with extra leg work on your part but if you want to just get to learning with you kids not
