Muriel Kingsley was born in Jamaica in 1943 and moved to England at the age of twenty-six after the death of her parents. Due to a lack of schooling, when she arrived in England she was still unable to write more than a shopping list and had read no more than a few chapters of the Bible. The author’s lack of education caused her great sadness and frustration, so while raising her six children she pursued, with enormous determination, the art of mastering reading and writing.
