This is another excellent book by Peni R. Griffin. The way she incorporated Jessy's problems with the treasure- finding plot was truly amazing. When I saw this book, I thought it would be a lot like the other book I have read by her, The Switching Well. It wasn't at all, but it still was especially good, and I really enjoyed it. 0.

With well-drawn characters and a strong sense of place, this short book is unusually rich in subplots and subsidiary themes: the importance of keeping promises; the romance of family history; development encroaching on a rural homestead; Jessy's grief at her neglect by a long-absent mother who drifts from one commune to another; the dynamics of a & family and their economic woes.

I think most boys who read long books will not mind the protagonist's being a girl. Esther is smart and resourceful, and sees plenty of action. Griffin is a wonderfully written book for kids (and adults!). A girl finds an arrow head and soon there is an archaeological dig going and she gets to be there during the summer. The last day they are going to be there, she is looking for anything else so the team will stay and dig more.
