One of my favorite Cinderella stories. My second grade teacher read this book to the class, and I still remember it... no fairy godmothers though, so a bit better I think, in teaching little girls to be their own heroes.

Lightwind

This is one from my childhood that I used to pour over again and again for the wonderful, fanciful pictures. Though the story is also captivating. Reading it as an adult I'm just as smitten and I don't mind at all that the 3-year-old girl I sit for asks me to read it over and over to her. I still do have to pause and look at the pictures with her on each page. The years have not diminished their wonderfulness.

This is a fairy tale of the type "Persecuted Heroine". Now, of course, the most popular fairy tale of that type is Cinderella, but to call this story a variation on Cinderella is like calling English a variation on Dutch! They have the same theme, maybe even the same origin, but one is not a version of the other.

In this story, the girl isn't persecuted at home, she runs from it to avoid a bad marriage. She isn't saved by her fairy godmother, but by her cleverness and good home cooking. And nobody gets married based upon their shoe size. In short, it is a bit more... realistic than the more popular story you may have heard.

I remembered this book for years after I lost my copy....and finally realized how easy it was to replace. Am I glad I did! What I remembered best was the art, especially the pictures of the princess in her amazing dresses, but upon reading it again for the first time in at least a decade, I found that the story itself was still as good as I remembered. Very well-written, and it was easy to imagine myself in her place. Great emotion. I love this book!

This is a book that my mother read to me all the time when I was growing up, I've long lost my copy, and I have been looking for it for about a year. This was one of those stories that I requested night after night. I loved the pictures and the way her dresses were described like the sun, moon, and stars (I would stare at the pictures of the dresses and imagine wearing them!). I was looking through a small stack of books my mom had set aside for me and this one was missing! I could not remember the title but every once in awhile I would try to google search it with descriptions that I remembered but with no luck!! I finally sat down today and spent about 2 hours trying everything I could think of and I FINALLY found it!! It's been over 10 years since I have read it and I cannot wait to get it and read it to my daughter someday!!

My favorite childhood book and now my niece's. It is a beautiful Cinderella type story with lovely illustrations.
