The book takes the form of a field guide for ecotourists viewing dinosaurs as if they currently roam North America – a rather novel premise with which Bob Strauss succeeds to a surprising extent. I was initially put off by this unexpected approach, but quickly understood that this enabled a level of humor and ‘color’ in what could otherwise have been a mere dry recital of facts. The book consists of profiles of 60 of the most common dinosaurs, Mesozoic marine reptiles, Pterosaurs, and a handful of crowd-pleasing prehistoric mammals such as Smilodon.

Brusatte (Field Guide to Dinosaurs) breaks up his survey into geologic periods and uses family trees, or cladograms, to illustrate how various dinosaurs are connected. The author's explanation of how the continents broke apart helps readers understand why T. Rex fossils tend to be found in the American West, and why new species are being found in China. Michael Benton is Head of Earth Sciences at Bristol University and Professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology.

Steve Brusatte has degrees in geophysical sciences and paleobiology from the University of Bristol. In 2007 he identified a brand new species of carnivorous dinosaur: Carcharodontosaurus iguidensis - one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs ever to have lived. Steve has published several papers on dinosaur evolution.

Join us on the most incredible safari imaginable: a journey back in time through the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous worlds to meet the most amazing creatures ever to have walked the Earth. Emerging over 230 million years ago as small carnivores that scurried about on two legs, the dinosaurs quickly expanded into a dizzying array of species that spread worldwide. For the next 160 million years the dinosaurs dominated ecosystems across the globe until a sudden catastrophic extinction event ended their reign. Field Guide to Dinosaurs allows you to see these astonishing animals.
