We are big Hairy Maclary fans in this house, both parent and child. This one is a particular favorite from the series with a strong plot than some of the other books in the series. Hair Maclary wants to chase the neighbors cats and enjoys all the trouble he causes! There will be a page with Hairy hiding and spying on his next victim; these pages are great for asking the child to find Hairy in the pictures. My 15 month old son though loves the pages that show Hairy chasing the cats! Hairy gets a taste of his own medicine though when he accidentally stumbles on Scarface Claw (The toughest tom in town) and is himself chased.

As with all the books in the series, this story features great word choice and rhythm- with some fun repetition older children will love to say along with you- and fun illustrations.

Hairy Maclary and Scattercat, one of whom I called Scarface McClaw, and I found each other in a bookstore in New Zealand in the approximate year 1989...on my visit to our son and daughter in laws. They had a table of on sale children's books and this book caught my eye. I read it and was laughing out loud, enjoying it thoroughly, causing a stir amongst the staid British New Zealanders, it was So hilarious a book. I Loved it from the start. I bought a copy for our grandchild back home - and - one for me. It was reminiscent of an incident that actually happened to me and my family while enjoying a day at the beach, I Had to have that book. The book and prose are wonderfully written so that a child may comprehend easily. The pictures are also great. So when our first Great grandchild was having his 1st.. birthday, the parents wanted book gifts and I thought, if Only I could find a Hairy McClary book for him too. To my amazement and delight, I found many Hairy Mclary books to buy from the Amazon website, their affiliates had many. Not only the Scattercat book but many other adventure books of Hairy Mclary...the wonderful delightful little dog. Both grandkids and families are animal lovers, particularly dogs and cats. These wonderfully written little simple books are perfect, The prose is constructed in easy simple statements a child (or grandma) can understand.

We (and our 2-1/2 year old boy) love Hairy Maclary and all his friends! Since we have a cat, I think we particularly like the ones that feature cats. And our little boy LOVES Scarface Claw. He loves making the Scarface Claw meeoooooowwww sound.

This is really a terrific book. I love the language Dodd uses. She doesn't talk down to kids just because they're small, and the language is lively and descriptive.

If you like Hairy Maclary, I definitely recommend this book. And if you've never read him, this would be a great first book to introduce you to Hairy and Lynley Dodd!

My daughter who loves animals couldn't get enough of this book at about ages 3-5. There is lots of alliteration, and the names of the animals are unforgettable (we have stuffed animals named after many of them.) The story is also one she related well to, as the youngest child, she identified with the cat who could scatter the big dogs. We bought this copy as a gift for another little sweetheart of a girl. We also like the rest of the series, but this is our favorite.

my 2 y/o daughter loves these books! i never get tired of reading them, and the illustrations are fantastic; the animals' faces are so expressive!

We recieved Slinky Malinky as a gift last year and read it so many times that the book fell apart! All of these books (any Slinky Malinky and Hairy McClary) have the cutest stories about mis-behaving animals interacting with each other and wreaking havoc for the humans in their lives. The illustrations are great and the stories are short enough that my one year old and three year old can both sit and enjoy them. I highly recommend any of the books in this series. They are just adorable.

My three year old loves cats (and dog). The Hairy Maclary books are very cute- I like the stories and rhyming patterns. This book is especially cute because he is chasing cats until he comes across one that is tough enough to chase him back. It's simple and cute- would recommend for young toddlers and pre-school age.

My daughter loves this book!
