Gertrude Sneller writes simply and clearly about her childhood and growing-up years in a small town, Cicero, north of Syracuse. I met Miss Sneller when I was a child (we are related through a long-ago marriage) and she signed a copy of her book for me. I still have it, but I wanted copies for each of my children. This past summer I took them to Cicero and showed them where Miss Sneller's house used to be. They loved seeing where the old Plank Road was (now a paved and very busy Route 11) and my guess as to where the old salt flats were...

"A Vanished World" is a living book, and an intriguing way to access life in the early 1900s. The story of her dad doing a teaching stint in a one-room schoolhouse is entertaining and insightful.

As Miss Sneller notes in her book, it's a way of life that will never come back. However, it is history and a very compelling read. Oops--she told me to never use "very" when writing. "Simply use the adjective that conveys what you want to say; 'very' is for weak writers." So: it is a compelling read.

The author was my 98 year old Mom's English teacher. I wanted a copy of the book which is no longer in print.I knew Amazon would be the only place to obtain it. It's a memoir about the world in which the author grew up in the northern part of Central New York State. this area is presently one of the busiest,most crowded suburbs in our area, and her reminiscences bring me back to the way it was when I was a girl.
The book was in excellent condition and the price cannot be beaten!

I liked the stories about the various family members and their tasks of daily living in their times. It brought back memories of visiting my own grand parents at their homestead in Hauppauge, Long Island, NY It was also a very small town at that time and they had a small garden to raise crops, chickens, hunt rabbits, and many problems of a like nature.

I loved this book for a number of reasons: (1) I live in Syracuse, N.Y. and this book gives a very personal view of living in the Syracuse area, (2) Sneller writes about a world that for many people has vanished but still lives and their memory, (3) I have a dear friend whose maternal ancestry
is Moulton so I am reading about her family's history and (4) whenever I read A VANISHED WORLD I feel as though I'm wrapped up in a blanket sitting near a warm glowing fire. This is an intimate picture of an extended family's daily life in a less hectic world....one that has vanished from most modern day living.

This memoir was well written and interesting. Sneller writes mostly about her family, including stories about her aunts and uncles' childhoods, which must have been heard while she was growing up. She also gives us a glimpse of what life around the turn of the century was like in central New York, north of Syracuse. Some of the information, about language, food, and clothing in particular, was fascinating. Sneller is quite frank and does not try to hide the ugliness that existed in the late 1800's, broaching such ugly topics as drunkeness, consumption, and incest. This was a quick, enjoyable read.
