His many awards include the Nestlé Gold Award, the UNESCO Prize and two Kate Greenaway Medals. The story is pure fantasy, about a boy who is the Emperor of Absurdia, with a wardrobe monster who helps him get dressed, a dragon that hatches from his lunch - which is an egg, and a bird that steals his scarf. In the end, he "dreams" he is a boy in a normal bedroom, with decorations and toys that look a lot like the like the animals and things he encountered in Absurdia. My kids really enjoy this book.

Welcome to Absurdia: a strange and wonderful land where nothing is quite what it seems. The illustrations are amazing, the font of the book helps the story. It's expansive book, especially hardcover, but totally worth it. My daughter, a young reader, cannot put this book down, reading it over and over again, and the font is large, that helps too. You have to read this story a couple of times to appreciate its magic.

Skyfish nibble umbrella trees, pointy birds steal scarves to line their pointy nests, and dinner is served before lunch. It's an absurd world, yet it all makes perfect sense as conceived by the unique imagination of Chris Riddell. Young children will be enchanted by this entertaining story of dragon hunts and hairy wardrobe monsters, and absorbed by the extraordinarily rich and detailed illustrations.
