Nicki Durlester comes from a large, close-knit Italian family whose members carry the BRCA2 gene, which is strongly associated with prostate, ovarian and breast cancer. Her book describes her feelings as she deals with her mother's death from breast cancer and how she responds when she is diagnosed with the same disease. Although there are many sad moments, this is ultimately a book of hope. There is also a lot of useful information here -- how to find the right physician, some of the newer genetic testing that is available, and how to help yourself heal psychologically from the trauma. I highly recommend this small gem as a comfort to those who have been diagnosed with a serious illness and as an inspiration to everyone. (F&M '78 - best wishes)

I'm a breast cancer survivor and learned of this book and the Pink Moon Lovelies private Facebook group after all my treatments. The Facebook proved to be enormously helpful and comforting and Nicki is one of the highlights there. Yet it wasn't until recently that I moved beyond my hesitation to actually her story in full. I wish I had read it sooner in some ways but again, I loved hearing how she evolved to be the inspiring but down to earth and comforting person she is today.

Thank you Mamma Bear for writing your story. As a fellow Survivor and Previvor, we "met" on Facebook in your group named for your memoir. Who knew at the time that the group do so well? With seeds sprinkled to and fro, it has grown into a place to come to ask questions, voice fears, share happiness and pray for those who need solace. You are a good friend, a client and a shining example of giving back. You were there for me when I had enormous doubts, when my mom died and recently when my brother went in for surgery. So many things in common are we two Pennsy girls. My father is an F and M grad and had breast cancer and passed the BRCA2 genetic mutation to me. I am the older sister of a brother. My mother was the most wonderful cook too. Though we have many differences I feel we were destined to meet and can't wait for your next trip to the East Coast!

Although simply put, I can not find the eloquent words to describe this beautiful book. Enjoyable, educational, and inspiring!

I so appreciate Mrs. Durlester's courage in opening up and allowing us an intimate view of all the pain and challenges she encountered while fighting cancer. She is not only a survivor and a true inspiration...she is my Hero!

Nicki Durlester has shared her experiences facing serious illness within her family as well as her own in a very real, heartfelt, and poignant way. Like Nicki, I first learned about breast and other tpyes of cancers within my family at a young age. I saw what my aunt's radical mastectomy looked like when I was a teenager. I watched both my younger sisters deal with, and survive, breast cancer. But I was not particularly prepared to face my own breast cancer diagnosis 5 years ago. People like Nicki who have the courage and heart to tell their stories are a gift of inestimable value to survivors, as well as those of us who have stood by the side of a family member who has cancer. For anyone desirous of learning more about facing the medical, physical and emotional realities of breast cancer, read Nicki's book. Nicki shows how one can persevere through the potentially crippling fear, sometimes overwhelming information, seemingly impossible treatment choices and options, and other difficult decisions. Most importantly, after reading her story, we know how this journey taken with competent and caring doctors, as well as the love and support of family and friends does, indeed, give us a truer perspective of what is most important about our lives.

I don't have much quiet reading time in my world right now and usually have to work on books little by little over a few weeks...but...as I opened the pages of "Beyond the Pink Moon" and my 5 year old son settled down for a nap on a long drive over Labor Day, I ventured into the pages and was able to experience Nicki Durlester's story in it's entirety. What an experience...for her, certainly first and foremost, but for me as well. I laughed, cried, was VERY touched by the kindnesses offered to her on her journey and her openness and gifted storytelling style! I highly recommend Beyond the Pink Moon to others and am thrilled to have purchased a few so I can share with friends! Kudos to Nicki Durlester for the courage it continually takes to survive her breast cancer legacy and for the courage to write and self-publish this work. I'm in awe....

This is not only a heartfelt story about the author's journey thru life and her diagnosis with breast cancer its a tale we can all relate to!
Its about family,love, and friendship and how all these things effect Nicki's survival and ultimately her positive attitude.
I especially loved the descriptive pages about her family home in Pennsylvania.... I can just picture Nicki and her Mom in the kitchen cooking and sharing stories! Her Mom's courage and stamina in the face of advesity are an inspiraton to all whether they have travelled this road or not.
Although the story is of a family afflicted with the BRCA2 gene, and how Nicki came to terms with this in her own life, it is an uplifting memoir and spiritual in so many ways.
Pls pass this book along to people you care about as it is a story not only of obstacles and challenge
but of hope and determination!
The pages turn fast and you wont put it down till its finished!!
