Excellent book following in the Montana Maverick Saga. Filled in a lot of
what happened to previous characters. Completely enjoyed

I really liked this book. As a Native American I know all too well the irritation of reading yet one more stereotypical story where the handsome chief falls for the pale-skinned blue-eyed blonde or the feisty alabaster-skinned redhead. Thankfully that isn't this story. Sam is very believable as a very proud full-blood Cheyenne man who is dedicated to the culture and strengthening of his tribe. Julia is equally believable as a mixed-blood Cheyenne woman who had been raised "white" and thus knows nothing about her heritage but really wants to find out...what we Natives refer to as a "Lost Bird". The rest of the Native and non-Native characters are also very believable and not peripheral or flat at all. The author shows great respect for Native people as living, breathing human beings who live in a culture and community that has weathered some hellacious storms since first contact. She broaches the subject of bilateral prejudices well, and doesn't diss small-town life as being "quaint" or "unexciting" as some authors have done. I enjoyed this book and series well enough to have read the books I have several times.

My pick is with the cover. In the story Sam Brightwater is a full-blood Cheyenne with long braids. The guy on the cover is a clean-cut white guy with a dark complexion. The woman likewise is a brunette white chick. And oh yes - Native Americans do NOT look like white folks with dark hair and good tans. We have our own beauty, our own "look" and frankly I don't know why the illustration team can't or won't appreciate that. It's not like they can't find Native American models...there are several sites specifically for Native American male and female models. Hell, I KNOW several Natives who model professionally and you can bet I'm going to use them when my novels get published or I'm going to do my own artwork (including the one already on Amazon Kindle).
