So, not the type of person who, upon hearing that a book is about an Iranian rug dealer and his relationship with a young American woman, shouts, "Awesome! Bring it on!" Yet circumstances led me to read this book, which I started with some trepidation.

The Rug Merchant book. What would a woman named Meg Mullins know about the experiences and innermost thoughts of a middle-aged male Iranian immigrant? Nothing, it turns out. This book is trite and written by someone who hasn't lived long enough to spout the truisms that fill the pages.

Well, I found this book to be a page-turner, and finished it in just two days. The writer does her job well, inasmuch as I felt I was there with Ushman and Stella, seeing what they were seeing, smelling what they were smelling.

I usually read thrillers such as "The Da Vinci Code" or high-fantasy novels by the likes of George R. R. Martin, and I count "Aliens" as my all-time favorite movie. So, not the type of person who, upon hearing that a book is about an Iranian rug dealer and his relationship with a young American woman, shouts, "Awesome! Bring it on!"

Yet circumstances led me to read this book, which I started with some trepidation. (I've been burned occasionally by books with reviews that state, "Well-written," and "true-to-life characters," which can sometimes translate to, "Difficult, hard to chisel through prose," and "boring.")

"Well-written" here means an eloquent, fast-moving writing style that effortlessly meshes the interesting, hard-to-predict, and dare I say it, true-to-life characters (in a good way) with subtle truths about human nature that deep down we all know, but since we rarely see them discussed we can't help but smile as we read them. (One tiny example, "Ushman looks at the lighted windows and yearns to be let in. Even if there is no soccer match on TV. Just to sit around a table with people in the middle of the night, their camaraderie heightened by the absurdity of the hour.")

For me, this was a page-turner in a far different manner than what I'm used to, but a page-turner nonetheless. Highly recommended (even if you DO have a book about rampaging prehistoric sharks on the top of your Wish List).

Erennge

The heroine's name may be Stella, but this book is truly stellar. The author's depth of feeling for all her characters gives credibility to the story, although she is a Caucasian American woman writing about an Iranian Muslim man. This is superior writing, intensely sensual and sensitive. She shows compassion and insight into even minor characters, who at first seem unsympathetic: a seemingly stupid and bossy rich woman, an abusive African street vendor, an aggressive Vietnamese prostitute. Although she may not be nor have experienced these people, she makes them real. She gets is across that everyone has pain and sadness, even people who seem to have everything their way. I especially liked her use of short phrases to convey a whole mood or sense of being. Ushman, lonely in New York and knowing no one, feels like "a man without a schedule." Been alone in Manhattan? That is so perfect! When Farak has a miscarriage, she tells her husband it feels like she is "being impaled on a skewer." One of the best is near the end, when Ushman says to Mrs. Roberts, "Love is mathematical, not chemical." Do yourself a favor and read this book. Writers like this don't come along every day.

Nanecele

Well-written little gem of a book. Based in New York City and Queens, it captures local and seasonal atmosphere. Nevertheless, I found the ending to be rather abrupt and puzzling. There were also some elements (such as the Southern upbringing of one of the characters, or an attempted suicide by her mother) that didn't really seem relevant to the plot. It also would have been nice to get more out of all the rugs that are in Ushman's store.

Painwind

Thought I'd be fascinated by the different culture perspective -- and I'm particularly fascinated by rugs. However, while I managed to keep reading, the book never "caught" me. It was slow, in my opinion.

Took me a while to even remember that I had read this.
When a local book club member offered this as a choice, I looked it up on amazon. It took me a while to even remember that I had read this. . . . it's that forgettable. What a bore. Characters were not drawn out. . .story is implausible. It's vacant, empty.
