Many years ago, my grandmother told me about a book she had read, The Cold Moons, and lent it to me to read. I quickly fell in love like she had, rooting for the badgers in the story, feeling their struggle as my own, their heartaches and betrayals and the unfairness of their situation as though it was happening before me. That was many years ago, and my grandma passed the book on to another friend, who never returned it, yet she never forgot it, always talking about the story and trying to explain it to others. For years I looked for a copy, before I had Amazon, but it was too hard to find, unfortunately. Her 70th birthday came up, and she mentioned the book a week before, and I knew I had to find it for her. And I did, for such a cheap, amazing price, in such good condition! She was thrilled, and could not stop talking about it, and now she has other people wanting to read it. I had to get a copy for my own book collection, as well, and love to revisit this story often.

Most reactions are badgers?! But seriously, it works. I know it is often compared to Watership Down, and I can understand why, but there is also a historical element to the Cold Moons, and how the badgers were accused to spreading tuberculosis to cattle and the program that was put in place to eradicate them. Every so many chapters is a chapter that are from different news publications and their take on the situation, some for the program and some against. It added a different touch to the story, another view of what the humans were doing while the badgers sought safe haven. I cannot say much more without spoiling the story, but it is worth a read. It is definitely one of those that sticks with you through the years.

this is an account of the near extermination of the badger population in the uk. the novel is from an inspired accounting from the intelligence and spirit of badgers. aeron clement brilliantly crafts their story and supports the events with actually newspaper clipping of the events as published in the u.k. many lessons to be learned about the inextricable connection of all living things to one another. ignorant & stupid "experts" inaccurately believed badgers were carriers of the bacteria which causes bovine tuberculosis and were responsible for spreading infection to cattle - infecting the meat and milk - and evenutally, humans. as a result, the government enforced an aggressive campaign to exterminate badgers. the aggressive campaign continued even after it was proven the badgers were NOT responsible for the spread of bovine tuberculosis. a wildlife campaign defending badgers ensued.

This is one book that should never have gone out of print, while there are bad books which are still on the shelves of bookstores. This book is a classic! It is like Richard Adams' Watership Down, only better. It has the classic theme of the Great Pilgrimage that has been in many other books since Pilgrim's Progress.

The badgers, after receiving a warning of impending disaster from one who has survived the slaughter of his own sett, set out to find their Elysia. On the way, a young badger named Beaufort is thrust into the role of leadership despite his reluctance. This gives the story of courage, determination against almost impossible odds, betrayal, and hope. The goal is to find a place beyond the reach of man, who is not a natural enemy, but one who has gone astray. This is one of the best books I have ever read, and it is well worth reading again and again!

If you liked watership down, or the Warriors series, want something a little different, Check this book out!

I've heard this book called a remake or knock off of Watership Down. I assure you it is nothing of the kind. I have read this book seven times since first discovering it in grade school and every time I find some new reason to love it all over again.

The new book is as wonderful as she remembers and she is very excited to have it in her collection once more. The new book is now stored in a safer location, out of puppy reach.

With humble apologies to other reviewers, I must say that I can see exactly why this book is out of print. _Cold Moons_ is a book in the spirit of Watership Down, but it lacks clarity and originality. It has a copy-cat quality: the horror of the poisoned den, the flight to new home, the cruelty of man and betrayal of fellow animals, the trials along the way, etc. These elements are pulled straight out of Watership Down with a few un-improvements. The writing itself is inconsistent, varying from fairly good to quite poor. For instance, in places, the characters appear to be floating in empty space. We are not told where they are standing, what is around them, what the weather's doing, no background scenery at all. This is puzzling in a novel that relies solely on the countryside for placement and texture. Without these details, time and distance become confused. In parts of the story, it becomes unclear how much time has passed or how much distance the animals have traveled. (We're talking: "Has it been one day or one week?" sort of thing.) I found these details exceedingly distracting. In addition, I personality found it difficult to care about the characters. Their personalities seemed too "stock," pulled right of the "adventure-characters" shelf. Near the end of the book, the writing improved somewhat, and I have the idea that if the writer had spent more time editing, he might have come out with something really worth reading. As it was, I had difficulty finishing the book.
