Evan S. Evan Connell is, in my opinion, without peer among current American writers. This collection is masterful in all respects except one: too much of its contents were included in an earlier collection of his work. If you have been a faithful reader of everyting he has written, it is a disppointment to find so much repeated here. If you are new to his writing, by all means read this book.

Evan S. Connell is by any measure one of America’s greatest living writers. His restraint, concision, and perfect pitch lend themselves stunningly to the short story form. He intuitively senses when to explain and when to let silence stand in speech’s stead. His charactersamong them, a wanderer back from Spain, the corpulent Mr. Bemis, Katia and her lionring true not because the stories are filled with monumental events, but because they center on seemingly insignificant experiences that remain in the mind, imbued with a meaning ever difficult to define. Often we are left to float in their wake, ending in an ellipsis of sorts. Yet by Connell’s mastery, even the voices that speak only once resonate beyond the final page.

Fato

I was not aware of this writer until a friend recommended him to me. Connell has a big supply of stories to tell, and he can be funny or serious about them. He is great at varying perspectives during the telling, shifting focus. The effect is a bit like in some later O'Neill plays, where the actors speak their thoughts to the audience.
A wonderful diversity and range of material.
I was also attracted by the title, expecting something Indian. There is some, but not that much.

Some of the stories have repeat protagonists.
One of these is William Koerner, a youngish man of shifting definition and location. He has an old but globetrotting uncle. Koerner is used as an observation base for watching some odd people, like the gay bashing rich man who keeps inviting gays to his parties.
Another is a man on loan from Thomas Mann's Unordnung und frühes Leid, called Muhlbach. (Connell confesses this loan thing in a foreword.) The man has 2 little kids and his wife is dying; later she is dead and he has problems with the gap. That may sound somber, but these stories are far from trist.
Another one: Bemis, a retired broker in Kansas, starts outing himself as a liberal, away from the customary conservative stance of his place in society. His wife is scandalized.
Or a group of pals from school days: one of them has become something like a global vagabond to the puzzlement of those who stayed home in their small mid Western town. (These I see among the weaker stories; too stereotypical.)

And some solitairs: such as a pregnant woman, alone in a house on a mountainside in Colorado, who watches with horror how a lion stalks a pregnant cow, driving her uphill. Or Tessie, the bible literalist who works for a family of intellectuals. Or Bowen, the promising novelist who doesn't make it beyond his first successful novel. For a while he tries to run an SF based literary magazine, an outrageously lunatic project.
Connell is an expert at voicing the 'people', the religious and conservative attitudes and opinions of middle America, and at creating eccentric characters.

As much as I like the story collection, despite some unevenness, which probably is par for the course, I have issues with the edition. What disturbs me a bit about the kindle version is the lack of publishing information about the stories. It seems that the pocket book edition has the same flaw. That's what I gather from a newspaper review that I found in google.

Obviously some stories are new and others are taken from older publications. One would wish to be told from where and when.
Obviously I am unable to judge if the selection of old stories for this volume makes sense. There might be others, better suited. I don't know.
I wish I could split my rating. I would give 5 stars without hesitation to the stories and not more than 3 stars to the edition.

Evan Connell belongs to the rank of one of America's finest writers by a large margin and it is somewhat surprising that one does not hear of his name more often. Having enjoyed his better-known novels "Mr. & Mrs. Bridge" many years ago, and while I have been sending these literary gems to acquaintances here and abroad over the last two decades, it was a wonderful discovery recently when I came across his short stories which address every facet of life in a way that a great majority of us may recognize or can relate to in some fashion. While as an author, Mr. Connell always stands at an objective distance from the reader, his stories made me re-evaluate some of my current views, laugh at myself, remind me that I have a lot to learn and that in many cases it would be worth one's time to examine two sides of the same coin before making conclusive decisions or adopting a life-long attitude carved in granite. In many cases throughout his varied and diversified accounts, there appear to be traces of surrealism, sadness, comedy and irony in the safety of what one might consider the definition of reality or mundane situations. Mr. Connell confirms that life is seldom painted in opaque or white hues but has heavy traces of subtle and fine grey shades in the entirety of its vast frame. A skilled reviewer would be able to give full justice to this collection of short-stories, extremely diverse in content and very rich. I will only say that his work is beautiful, entertaining and enlightening.

Lestony

A master story teller whose incredible talent as a writer was even more remarkable given Connell's unassuming nature and lack of interest in self-promotion despite his impeccable pedigree and training. His stories are so engaging they easily lend themselves to reading and then rereading.

Vizuru
