Continues in her now established vein of superb story telling, trenchant observations of human characters, usually brought together around some aspect of food-eating, cooking, catering. It is fiction, but it's hard not to hear Diane's tantalizingly auto-biographical voice in the first-person narratives of lives of chefs in restaurants dealing with witty and damaged people in poignant ways.

Diana Goodman (born 1952 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a New Zealand-born journalist who became the BBC's first female foreign correspondent. Goodman was educated at Lytton High School, Gisborne, and Samuel Marsden Collegiate School for Girls, Wellington, before studying journalism at the Wellington Polytechnic School of Journalism. After graduating, she worked for the Cook Islands Broadcasting and Newspaper Corporation, The Dominion, and the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation

JUST DO IT

While not every story in this collection takes place at a party, the female characters in each story experience the universal moments of self-doubt--Do I look okay? Do I have anything worthwhile to say? Are people talking about me behind my back?--that one tends to experience on the cusp of, during, or after a social gathering. Goodman showcases how the ritual of social gatherings, even something as mundane as a casual weekend lunch with friends, can dredge to the surface insecurities that otherwise remain dormant during one's private moments. While the protagonists suffer from stereotypical "women problems" (obsessing over one's weight; suspicion of a husband's/boyfriend's infidelity; vying for attention amongst younger, prettier rivals), Goodman writes in such a way that the stories come off as anything but trite. The characters are well-rounded and extremely specific in personality and circumstance, yet are still completely relatable to the reader because they all seek answers to the most basic of human sentiments by "wondering what it is that people want from one another."

Food also plays an important role in most of the stories. The characters use food and food preparation as a form of communication with others--as a tool to impress neighborhood women, an indicator of social or economic status, or simply as way to show others that they are respected and loved enough to warrant the time and effort required of a treasured recipe.

Overall, a really good, quick read.

Diane Goodman's new story collection is a wonder--surprising and psychologically acute as, like the masters Chekov and Alice Munro, she very deliberately transforms the highly particular circumstances of her characters into ringing universal truths. Sly humor and wrenching unhappiness alternate in these stories, but at the heart of each is Goodman's unflinching awareness about what really motivates her character's utterances and gestures. Goodman's prior two collections, The Genius of Hunger and The Plated Heart, are full of the kinds of morsels that abound in Party Girls, but this new outing is of an altogether different and higher order. Goodman has worked professionally as a caterer and chef, and while these stories, like the prior two books, are thoroughly grounded in that world, they are no longer primarily about it. Instead these stories are about (often heroic) personal striving and her characters' hard won deepening of consciousness. Out of the often amusing dance of their circumstances, Goodman's people reveal themselves as people we can understand and love. This is not an ordinary book. It is a great book.

Dr. Goodman is truly gifted. I had the honor of being in on of her classes in college, and can only hope to write as well as she does. This is a wonderful book of short stories.

Miami Beach-based personal chef Diane Goodman is the author of three collections of short stories. Party Girls, her most recent, is a slim, entertaining meditation on human relationships through the lens of entertaining.

The stories in this collection, which one could easily turn away from on the basis of title and cover art, are smart, sharp, witty and sometimes ruthless. A vein of sorrow and desperation runs just beneath the surface of Goodman's characters and their plot lines, and the stories are by turns heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny. In "The Hungry Girl," for instance, a vengeful personal chef with a vendetta against an arrogant, talentless chef-cum-hack instructor takes the deplorable, repugnant man through a series of uproarious, vicious exercises of wrath that incite giggles in readers, while in "Abracadabra," a lonely chef is taken advantage of by a talented, much younger, and utterly ruthless culinary genius. In each of the stories, Goodman's intelligence and innate understanding of human nature shine through.

Added to this is the food-based premise of each story in Party Girls. Goodman is, after all, a personal chef, and food is something she knows very well. The preparation, the presentation, the world of restaurants and kitchens and line cooks and servers that is so foreign to most of us. What Goodman is able to do in these stories is utilize her knowledge of food and the food industry and combine it with a diverse cast of characters to tell illuminating, honest, and often painful stories of human frailty and loneliness. But always with something delicious on the side.

I was already a fan of Diane Goodman before I read Party Girls, but now, she has rocketed up to become one of my absolute favorite authors. The stories in this collecion--which are not, by the way, about a bunch of young, drunk twenty-somethings partying, as the title might have led you to believe--all share some common themes. Yes, the principal characters are all women (though not girls), and yes, there is some form or reference to a party in every story, but the stories share far more in common than those surface level themes. The characters in these stories are all desperately trying to stay afloat. They're drowning--in their own insecurities, in their fantasies of different lives, in their disconnection from those around them, in their fears that they are incapable of change.

Every single one of these stories is absolutely brilliant. The characters are real, their voices true and compelling. Though they're not necessarily likeable, I found myself liking them, anyway. I sympathized with them; I understood them. There simply isn't a false note in the entire collection. My favorites were "Candyland," "The Hungry Girl," and "The Other Mothers," but honestly, I LOVED every single story in the collection, and believe me, that's rare.
