acclaim for David Guterson’s David Guterson is my great hope for the future of American fiction
acclaim for David Guterson’s. The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind. The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind is superb, tough, intense, wise, with characters meticulously rendered. I really cannot imagine a more affecting first collection. David Guterson is my great hope for the future of American fiction. Here at last is an antidote for the pretense and fashionable angst in Brat Pack fiction of the 1980s. Charles Johnson, author of Middle Passage.
his mother announced. And is this connected to the intercom system? Certainly it is. The whole house is. So you can call him for dinner. How convenient inner, said Paul’s mother. If dinner existed, yes. She laughed, airily, at her own words. The guests fanned out, looking at things with calm detachment, absorbed by the walls, the floor. Paul, his hands in his lap, sat on the edge of his bed and watched them silently. He has his own television, someone pointed out. He has his own television, yes, said Paul’s mother.

As usual, his writings are thought-provoking. Though this book did not reach the popularity of his SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS (which was made into a movie), it still is surely a most worthy read.
We went down there, I said
We went down there, I said. We got two motel rooms at the end of the Strip, at the edge of town, after the swimming pool there was only the desert, scrub brush and barbed wire fences. It was a quiet place, hot and dusty, air conditioned, cigarette and pop machines in all the landings. A maid came at ten o’clock and cleaned your room. The other had a leg turned behind her; her toes made circles in the desert air. A man read a book on the far side of the pool, seated on a towel, his bald head sunburned, his pectorals drooping.
Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. A lover of short story collections, David Guterson does not disappoint. Start by marking The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. Noted more for his book Snow Falling on Cedars, he's written thought provoking, sometimes disturbing stories. Set mainly in the Pacific Northwest, and mostly about boys, men, and the transition from one to the other. Guterson has a way with words that I enjoy savouring.
Like his novel, Snow Falling On Cedars, for which he received the PEN/Faulkner Award, Guterson's beautifully observed and emotionally piercing short stories are set largely in the Pacific Northwest. In these vast landscapes, hunting, fishing, and sports are the givens of men's lives. With prose that stings like the scent of gunpowder, this is a collection of power.
