James Kirkup, who has died aged 91, was an extraordinarily prolific writer in many genres. Though perhaps best known as a poet, he was also an accomplished translator of verse, prose and drama, a fine travel writer, a dramatist and an autobiographer of distinction. He described himself as having an "inborn sense of deep solitude and apartness". After the war he worked - unsuccessfully - as a schoolteacher.
