This is my first book of poems, which I wrote during and immediately after college. I was astonished when the University of Missouri Press offered publication, and I still have nostalgic feelings for the young guy who wrote it and his poetry. Individual poems were published, I see from the Acknowledgments page, in wonderful journals fledgling poets like me loved: Epoch, Kayak, Poetry Northwest, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere.

His sharp wit and hard-won wisdom make Subway to California a story that anyone who’s risen out of a hardscrabble life with the odds stacked against them will love and learn from. Joseph Di Prisco is a very fine novelist and poet who has now written a moving and actually quite funny memoir about life with two parents who should never have married, and once they did, should never have had children. But then we wouldn't have Joe to tell us their story. It's an unholy blend of church and crime.
