János Pilinszky (1921-81) is one of the great European poets of an extraordinary generation: that of Paul Celan, Zbigniew Herbert and Yves Bonnefoy. Like them he grew up to a world physically and morally devastated by the Second World War and the Holocaust. In Passio, Clive Wilmer translates from Hungarian in collaboration with George Gömöri, whom he first met in 1971. CLIVE WILMER: The difficulty of translating Pilinszky is mostly to do with his extreme economy and plainness. I introduced the word though in the second line to create a rhyme: it doesn't represent a word in the original. Otherwise my stanza is virtually a literal rendering

Clive Wilmer (born 10 February 1945) is a British poet, who has published eight volumes of poetry. He is the brother of writer and photographer Val Wilmer.
