John Gerard Braine was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1922. He sprang to immediate fame in 1957 with publication of his first novel, Room at the Top, which was a critical success and a major bestseller in England and America and was adapted for the screen in an Oscar-winning 1959 film starring Simone Signoret and Laurence Harvey.
John Gerard Braine (13 April 1922 – 28 October 1986) was an English novelist. The Two of Us (1984). These Golden Days (1985). Braine is usually listed among the angry young men, a loosely defined group of English writers who emerged on the literary scene in the 1950s. Man at the Top (Thames Television, 1970-1): five scripts for the first series of this drama based on Braine's character Joe Lampton. A Personal Record (Monday Club, 1968).

John D. Fitzgerald was born in Utah and lived there until he left at eighteen to begin a series of interesting careers ranging from jazz drummer to foreign correspondent. His stories of The Great Brain were based on his own childhood in Utah with a conniving older brother named Tom. These reminiscenses led to eight memorable Great Brain books. Fitzgerald also wrote several best-selling adult books, including Papa Married a Mormon. They are absolutely fascinated by "How people lived way back then.
