Russell Reading Braddon (25 January 1921 – 20 March 1995) was an Australian writer of novels, biographies and TV scripts. His chronicle of his four years as a prisoner of war, The Naked Island, sold more than a million copies. Braddon was born in Sydney, the son of a barrister. He served in the Malayan campaign during World War II. He was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese in Pudu and Changi prisons and on the Thailand-Burma Railway between 1942 and 1945.

The black drapes are a deliberate piece of theatre, intended to conceal the reality of the chamber from the mourners, who believe that the late lamented’s body is now immediately being consumed in the flames of a fiery furnace. In fact, the coffin arrives at the chamber and is deposited on a trolley, where the lid is loosened (or the coffin will explode).

Item Description: This book has light wear. There is a very small tears (1/4 inches) in the side margin of pages 135 & 137. There is a date written inside the front cover. This book was a library book and has card holder, stamp, and reference sticker. They sat there, crossword puzzles completed, quietly reading their newspapers, the elderly man of sixty-six and the young man of twenty. The elderly man, silver-haired and gaunt, sat straight-backed on a wooden chair.
