What an easy and exciting read this book was! It kept me up longer than I wanted on a couple of nights. It's amazing how Erik blends in character development with story line. I really enjoyed it and "Small Magics". Erik shows off his real life fighting and stage experience with life-like scenes.The action is such that at the end of the book I'm wondering how he's going to wrap it all up. Erik does a great job of that , too!
Can't wait for the next book in the series. I'm not going to say "final" in the series because I want the adventure to go on and on!

I just finished Cold Magics by Erik Buchanan. It's a book that has just enough of everything. The world is just fleshed-out enough to really come to life without bogging the book down in description of things that won't matter, there's enough action to keep things lively and tense without turning it into a book about swordfighting, there's enough tenderness, teasing and tension between the love interests and the friends to believe that they really do care about each other without ever crossing the line into eye-rolling melodrama or making the book unsuitable for younger readers, and there's enough at stake to keep the plot moving and the pages turning.

Actions have consequences, seems to be the theme, as the trouble shaken up in the first book (alluded to thoroughly enough that this sequel stands alone) ripples all throughout the story. I liked the fact that the world isn't going to forget the things that happened around the characters just because the first book is over. Conversely, rumor has had time to spread and resentment has had time to fester. While characters have to face the consequences of their choices, it's to a realistic extent. Reading through, I never felt that the grudge between the sides was drawn out just to create drama. When things turn dark, the book isn't afraid to 'go there', but it stays tasteful in its delivery, which makes it much more powerful than gratuitous gore would be.

Buchanan treats circumstances with appropriate weight, and he treats characters like real people. They're insecure, they say things they shouldn't and hold back things they should say. They react to traumatic things with the appropriate amount of trauma. When they make mistakes, they let it get to them before they pick up and move on. Even though it's up to the younger characters to save the day, it's not a Harry Potter world where the kids are always right and the adults are always oblivious. Sometimes the adults are right. Sometimes the characters make mistakes, and sometimes when they succeed it's by pure chance. There's no "I'm the chosen one and I can do no wrong" hero like you see so often in fantasy coming-of-age novels, and it makes a refreshing change. Even the bad guys aren't just evil for evil's sake -- they have conflicts of their own, and reasons and beliefs behind what they do. And though they don't switch sides on a dime, they're not above exhibiting some growth too, when circumstances bring push to shove.

I'm a sucker for witty banter, and this book provides plenty of it... but there's depth in it, too. There's real, resonant connection between the four leads. They all have conflict and they're all 3-dimensional. As any good ensemble piece should, the story gives them each their opportunity to shine.

Cold Magics is a romping good time. High fantasy at its best. Subtle, fraught with tension (so much so I had to read fluff in order to sleep at night) and the action is wonderful. Bordering effortlessly between YA and adult high fantasy, Cold Magics treats its readers like intelligent beings. If you are looking for Percy Jackson, go somewhere else. If you are looking for intrigue, sword fights and an endless question of who you can trust... read Cold Magics.
Have to say that I was completely unprepared for the ending. In an effort not to spoil it for any of you, I will say only this: It takes a lot to surprise me, but Cold Magics did.
My only eenzy-weenzy complaint is that it ended rather abruptly, but there was an obvious lead into the next book, which I can't wait to read!
If you love sword fights, tension and adventure, you can't go wrong with this book!
