In Milan Kundera’s distinctive style, this book is part fiction and part philosophy. Even though it is more like a novella, I don’t think anyone other than Kundera could fill so many pages with so little a story. It’s almost as if Kundera thinks (profoundly) about the nature of conformism, identity, love, romantic ennui and then weaves the thinnest possible plot around his reflections- just enough that the reader would never feel like giving up on the book. It is quite a talent!

Translated by Linda Asher. French title: L'identité. Return to top of the page -. Our Assessment: B : A small book, but successful in what it sets out to do - though very different from his earlier Czech novels. Those who enjoyed Kundera's broader Czech tapestries might want to think twice before picking this up, those who enjoy contemporary French and German literature and don't approach the book with expectations of laughter and forgetting should definitely have a look.

Rich in its stories, characters, and imaginative range, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is the novel that brought Milan Kundera his first big international success in the late 1970s
The author initially intended to call this novel The Lyrical Age. The lyrical age, according to Kundera, is youth, and this novel, above all, is an epic of adolescence; an ironic epic that tenderly erodes sacrosanct values: childhood, motherhood, revolution, and even poetry. Rich in its stories, characters, and imaginative range, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is the novel that brought Milan Kundera his first big international success in the late 1970s. Like all his work, it is valuable for far more than its historical implications.
