Beth s faith impacts on all aspects of her life and is now both a source of joy and a source of anguish. The biggest challenge to her faith resides in her home in the form of a partner who simply cannot accept Beth's god. Meanwhile, Nicole finds herself facing a crisis of her own as she starts to realize that she's always going to have to share the woman she loves with a god she cannot honor. With the love between them the one undeniable truth in their lives, these two women will try to breach the gulf separating them. It's a challenge that will require compromise, honesty, patience and above all else - faith in one another.

Hesed was a fine introduction to Maytee's epic trilogy. Agape picks up exactly where Hesed leaves off, no redundancy at all. The characters Beth and Nicole are further developing and exploring their similar values and dissimilar theological beliefs.

Beth leaves her beloved Episcopal priesthood while Nicole bends to almost breaking to support her partner. Something has to give.

Having read the final book in the trilogy, Emet, the overall ranking of the story is outstanding. It is quite thought provoking and allows the reader to become a part of the journey to personally reconcile the fundamental decency of being.

I liked the story of the personal struggles of two women who are falling in love but who have different religious and spitural views. The book was a little slow and repetitive at times.

This book is unique because it deals with the tensions that exist in a relationship when the partners have such different visions of religion. It could be said that Aspuro y Gonzalez makes the story more complicated by having the couple be lesbians, except that their lesbianism never really plays a part in the discussion. These are not women who are battling a church. They are trying to find a way to bring their ideas together as much as possible to make their lives work. Beth's beliefs shape every part of her life and it is a struggle for her that Nikki will not share her feelings. Nikki isn't an atheist. Quite the contrary since she is an avid student of all theological texts. She takes a more universal view of religion and god though and cannot share Beth's total surrender to her own vision. Nikki doesn't want to share Beth with God, but she realizes she has no choice if wants to live with a woman she truly loves.

The interesting aspect of this book is that it doesn't follow the traditional formula of romances, but deals with a very real issue that confronts many couples. There's never any doubt that Beth and Nikki love each other, but their lives are founded on basic and fundamental differences. Any relationship requires compromises in order for it to work, but some compromises are bigger than others. These women have to struggle to find a faith in each other that can provide a foundation strong enough to support their differences. This is a battle that often doesn't end successfully for the people involved.

Religion, or the lack of it, is a very personal and emotional topic for most people. It takes great confidence for an author to tackle it as honestly as Aspuro y Gonzalez does. She takes the reader on a journey with her characters. Beth and Nikki don't preach at each other. Each of them has questions about her own beliefs, but she stands by her basic position. This is not a story where once partner suddenly renounces what she has said and accepts the other's values. By open and honest discussion they search for the common ideas that bind them together. Where they end up may not be what the reader expects.

Agape is a thoughtful book, but the story is told basically as a romance. A reader doesn't have to be concerned about being bogged down in theological discussions, but she may find herself weighing her own beliefs while she enjoys the story. It's an easy book to read, but not for someone who is looking for the simple romances that are so popular.

This is the second in a three-part series. The first book, `Hesed,' was fantastic. `Agape' follows at the same quality of writing. I cannot find any information on `Emet,' the third book, but am anxious to read it when it's available.

Here, Episcopal priest Beth Kelly is making a life with her partner and non-believer Nikki Thera. Beth loves God and she struggles every day as she no longer feels him in her life. She is working on a degree and is a chaplain at a local hospital. This keeps her hands busy, but her heart is dedicated to Nikki.

At the same time, Nikki struggles with her own demons. She may not believe in Beth's God, but she's looking for truth and is a voracious student of all theologies. She can and does hold her own in arguments with others on the subject. She also works hard to reconcile her own beliefs with those of the woman she loves with everything she is.

The entire book is about how Beth and Nikki struggle to come together as a couple and find ultimate truth in each other. As with personal belief differences in any relationship, Beth and Nikki area testament to the belief that love conquers all. The book is powerfully written and thought-provoking. It is emotional and unbelievably engaging.

Bottom Line - Can't wait for `Emet.' These gals have been through so much together, I am anxious to see what happens next.

This is the second book in the Trilogy and just as good as the first. It has made me rethink how I feel about religon and to look at my faith. I am looking forward to the conclusion and the way they end up.
