Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a modest lower-middle-class family. He lived in London all his life, retaining his Cockney accent and assiduously avoiding the trappings of success and fame.

LOVE, ROMANCE, AND SMUGGLING ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA It’s spring on the French Riviera and that means once again a fresh crop of fabulously rich widows comes from all points of the compass looking to find a little solace and a lot of l’amour. One man eager to provide both is the dashing (and deeply indebted) Englishman, Lord Helston, whose dream is to marry one of these moneyed matrons in the hope of enjoying a lifetime of financial bliss. Unfortunately, as with most dreamers, his plans are forever getting in the way of his ambitions. So the stage is set for the hilariously singular adventures (or should we say misadventures) of the hapless Lord Helston. Together with his companions from the Café de Paris — "Shellfish our specialty" — his lordship optimistically sets out to ensnare his dream widow. But as usual in the best farce, it’s not long before all goes awry and Lord Helston finds himself being chased by everyone, including irate flower sellers, smugglers, mobsters, creditors, and even the Italian Navy.
