As Eliot’s concept of the unconscious formed the basis for his philosophy of religion and philosophy of art, so the unconscious again is fundamental to his theory of poetry. Eliot insists repeatedly that both the impetus for a poem begins in thepoet’s unconscious and the process of communication of a poem ultimately ends in thereader’s unconscious: poetry may make us from time to time a little more aware of the deeper, unnamed feelings which form the substratum of our being, to which we rarely penetrate (UPUC155).
