Proposal in the Context of Swift’s Irish Tracts: A Relevance-Theoretic Study, by Maria-Angeles Ruiz Moneva.

A Modest Proposal in the Context of Swift’s Irish Tracts: A Relevance-Theoretic Study, by Maria-Angeles Ruiz Moneva. This book first published 2010. Cambridge Scholars Publishing. A Modest Proposal, then, has been regarded as a masterpiece of irony and satire, for instance, by critics such as Rowse (1975), Ward (1973), Speck (1969) or Davis (1964, 1947). The present work sets out to examine this piece in the context of the literary production by Swift on the Irish Question, with a view to assessing one of the main controversies raised around the work from pragmatic standpoints of analysis.

Swift's A Modest Proposal has always aroused the interest not just of literary critics, but also of linguists and pragmatists. Within the latter approaches, the study of irony, and more concretely, the intentions and attitudes that must have guided the production of such an intricate work, have always been paramount. However, it seems that within pragmatics the analysis ha Swift's A Modest Proposal has always aroused the interest not just of literary critics, but also of linguists and pragmatists

Swift’s Modest Proposal of 1729 is often used as a test or limit case for irony or satire beyond the usual realm of literary . Ms. Moneva’s The Irish Tracts within Swift’s Literary Production treats Bullitt’s chapter on the Proposal in Jonathan Swift and the Anatomy of Satire (1961) as a central text.

Swift’s Modest Proposal of 1729 is often used as a test or limit case for irony or satire beyond the usual realm of literary criticism, especially in rhetoric and linguistics. It would be good to see the findings of these scholarly subcultures coalesce on so endlessly provocative a pamphlet, and the title of this study promises something of the kind. I remember thinking Bullitt’s book was particularly good when I read it in the 1980s, but the debate had moved on.

According to Sperber and Wilson’s (1986, 1995) relevance theory, for the identification of irony it is essential to find the echoic quality of the utterance and the speaker’s attitude of dissociation towards this utterance. This identification can be speeded up with multiple activation of contextual sources

Swift's 'A Modest Proposal' has always aroused the interest not just of literary critics, but also of linguists and pragmatists. Within the latter approaches, the study of irony, and more concretely, the intentions and attitudes that must have guided the production of such an intricate work, have always been paramount. However, it seems that within pragmatics the analysis has been restricted so far to the 1729 work itself. In our view, it is interesting to contextualize this masterpiece of irony and satire within the wider production on Ireland by Swift, an approach that remains to be done. Accordingly, this work sets out to analyze a selection of Swift's 'Irish Tracts', with a view to tracing the evolution within Swift's literary production of his views and attitudes towards the situation of his homeland. Even though different pragmatic approaches are coped with, the emphasis is laid upon the contributions that the relevance-theoretical framework and its studies on irony may bring for the understanding of this Tract. The works selected are meant to cover and also be representative of the main phases currently distinguished within Swift's production on 'The Irish Question'. It is therefore hoped that a deeper analysis of the former works by Swift on this topic will provide new insights for a better understanding of 'A Modest Proposal'.
