Reconstructs a dialogue between objectifiers (American Puritans, slaveowners) and objectifieds (Native Americans, slaves) by arguing that the literature of race in antebellum America is the continuing story of an encounter with the grotesque.
Leonard Cassuto begins his exploration with Dreiser's An American Tragedy, an apt bookend for a text that concludes with a discussion of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones and Truman Capote's In Cold Blood as the other bookends. While Hard-Boiled Sentimentality traces the crime novel genre from 1900 to the present, it never examines these books in isolation.
ISBN 10: 0231103360, ISBN 13: 9780231103367. In revealing the source of the ideology of whiteness in the imagination, Cassuto turns to images of blackness in American literature and culture from 1622 to 1865, examining such texts as Swallow Barn, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Typee, and Moby Dick.
This book joins a distinguished recent trend in American criticism exemplified by the work of Eric J. Sundquist, Toni Morrison, Dana D. Nelson, Werner Sollors, Michael North, Ann Douglas, Kenneth W. Warren, Karen Sanchez-Eppler, Robert S. Levine, Eric Lott, and. Publication Date: Jan 1, 1997.
