Kiddush HaShem (Hebrew: קידוש השם‎ "sanctification of the Name") is a precept of Judaism. It includes sanctification of the name of God by being holy. The phrase "sanctification of the Name" does not occur in the Hebrew Bible, but the instruction "to sanctify " and the converse command "you shall not profane My holy name" is frequently expressed. Any action by a Jew that brings honor, respect, and glory to God is considered to be sanctification of his name.

Sholem Asch is often mentioned in the same breath as other modern Yiddish fiction-writers: Sholem Aleichem, . But Asch was decidedly quirkier. Peretz, Mendele Mokher Seforim. Sholem Asch, Sholem also spelled Shalom or Sholom, Yiddish Sholem Ash, (born November 1, 1880, Kutno, Poland, Russian Empire-died July 10, 1957, London, England), Polish-born American novelist and playwright, the most controversial and one of the most widely known writers in modern Yiddish literature. One of the 10 surviving children of a poor family, Asch was educated at Kutno’s Hebrew school. These novels describe the cultural and economic conflicts experienced by eastern European Jewish immigrants in America. Throughout his career Asch spent much time in Europe and made long visits to Palestine.
