The Joe Fishstein Collection of Yiddish Poetry, housed in the Division of Rare Books and Special Collections at McLennan Library, McGill University, is considered to be one of the finest private collections of its kind in the world. The book launch in January of that year was accompanied by a major exhibit of highlights from this collection at McGill Redpath Library, from January to March 1998.

Joe Fishstein, a garment worker in the Bronx, New York, amassed an extraordinary collection of some 2300 Yiddish books, mostly poetry, from many different countries. A Garment Worker's Legacy is a romanized catalogue of the collection, which is housed in the rare books department of the McLennan Library at McGill University. In addition to standard works, the collection includes many rare books, most of which have been preserved in vintage condition by beautiful hand-made jackets fashioned by Fishstein

JOSEPH FISHSTEIN: Garment Worker and Book-Collector Extraordinaire. Return to Kalarash Homepage page. Joseph Fishstein (1935). Joseph Fishstein was born in Kalarash in March, 1891. Joe Fishstein was a life-long devotee of Yiddish poetry and amassed a remarkable collection of some 2300 books, largely of Yiddish poetry. In 1981, his family donated Joe’s book collection to the McLennan Library at McGill University in Montreal. It is housed under the name The Joe Fishstein Collection of Yiddish Poetry.

In addition to standard works, the collection includes many rare books, most of which have been preserved in vintage condition by beautiful hand-made jackets fashioned by Fishstein. The collection also includes albums of early twentieth-century post cards and trade union memorabilia. The catalogue includes a preface by Ruth R. Wisse, who was instrumental in acquiring the collection for McGill, a comprehensive introduction, and extensive indices. A table of name equivalents links a name in its original Hebrew alphabet form to the Roman alphabet version used in the entries and indices. The illustrator index contains more than 400 artists, including Marc Chagall and El Lissitsky.
