When the childless uncle married again and started producing heirs, the Trollope family was set. on an inexorable downward path into genteel poverty. The story of Anthony’s hapless involvement in his father’s decline is poignantly told in the first chapter of his Autobiography.

When Reverend Josiah Crawley, the impoverished curate of Hogglestock, is accused of theft it causes a public scandal, sending shockwaves through the world of Barsetshire

When Reverend Josiah Crawley, the impoverished curate of Hogglestock, is accused of theft it causes a public scandal, sending shockwaves through the world of Barsetshire. The Crawleys desperately try to remain dignified while they are shunned by society, but the scandal threatens to tear them, and the community, apart.

Ralph the heir is an extravagant, easy living young man who has spent himself into debt, and is faced with having to either sell his right to the family property, or marrying a wealthy tradesman's (a breeches maker cutely named Mr. Neefit) daughter. Four young women are major characters, and these are sought by the two Ralphs, young Gregory, and a bootmaker, Ontario Moggs (don't you love the names?). These include the fairly sedate daughters of the family lawyer, a ravishing West Indian beauty come to live with them, and the tradesman's daughter.

Published in 1871, this novel tells a tale of crossed inheritance in which one Ralph Newton, a handsome ne'er-do-well, fully expects to inherit his family fortune, while his deserving cousin (also Ralph Newton), a bastard in the eyes of the law, cannot legally inherit what his father wishes to bequeath to him. Featuring the darker hues and confident social criticism of Trollope's maturity, this work presents a stunning portrait of the Victorian legal scene.
