On their way home, four coworkers and everyone else on the highway are struck by a strange noise, causing some to crash. Upon waking up, our protagonist and narrator, Steve, finds the driver dead and one of his other coworkers missing, leaving him, his remaining coworker, and a construction worker to brave the perils that lie ahead of them as they traverse the highway.

I will repeat what I said in my review of Brian Keene's Alone. When it comes to his shorter prose, I find it average. Long Way Home is no exception.

As you can probably tell from my headline, the story takes place during the Rapture. Any one who knows anything about the Rapture would be able to figure it out. And that's not really a problem. What is the problem, though, is that the whole story feels more like a prologue or extended beginning than a whole story.

It mostly involves the three characters traveling along the highway, encountering some tragedy or oddity, and moving along. Of course, since the characters are trying to get home it would make sense that they would want to move along. However, it just gets repetitive after awhile. It doesn't change until the three encounter the skinheads. Which was one of the last things to happen in the story.

Now on to the ending. Like I said, it feels like a prologue to something bigger. It's lackluster. Unless Steve shows up in Keene's The Seven series of stories or has showed up in other Labyrinth stories, it is just lackluster.

Overall, it's just average.

There are all kinds of kooky ways the world is supposed to end, but for as many end-of-the-world scenarios people cook up it is pretty hard to top sheer ostentatiousness of one of the original tales, that being the Rapture. When you sit back and look at the big picture of that apocalyptic scenario, you have to wonder what kinds of hallucinogens were available two thousand years ago. For that matter, I'm tempted to wonder what Brian Keene was smoking when he wrote this novella.

In actuality, the story requires nothing quite so mind-altering as real life, because despite the incredible otherworldly event that is seeing friends, loved ones, and total strangers all vanish in the blink of an eye as a great trumpet sounds, this world feels very real.

It begins on the interstate as four friends make the long commute home from Maryland to Pennsylvania on the interstate. They hear a blast, sounds awfully like a horn, and then the world descends into confusion and chaos. They get into a car crash, one of them dies, and the other is missing. As they get their wits about them, they see they aren't the only ones to get into a wreck, and many more are missing. Terrorist attack? Alien invasion? Scientific experiment gone awry? Several theories are bandied about and quickly shot down, but the one that keeps creeping back is the Rapture. The End Times have finally arrived and everyone is in for a whole lot of hurt.

For Steve (Jewish) and Charlie (gay), along with a kind stranger named Frank (atheist), it looks like they're not on the guest list for God's private party. With nothing more of a plan than to walk home, they put one foot in front of the other, wandering through a ravaged landscape that has erupted in violence and hate all too quickly. It might be horrific enough being left to fend for yourself on a forsaken world, but what's truly horrific is the other people you're surrounded by.

Plain-spoken and poignant, this is classic Keene, I reckon. No great zombie hordes, no, but the stark portrait of humanity is blazing on each page, right down to the quiet, awful end.

Ever since I read GHOUL, Brian Keene has been one of my favorite authors. He has always had the ability to hook me within the very first paragraph. I then spend the rest of the day burning through the pages and normally finish the book the same day.
The new edition of TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME from Deadite Press is no exception. A group of friends on their way home from work quickly find themselves in the middle of a horrible accident on the interstate. Upon further inspection they find that there have been multiple accidents going both directions, as well as planes falling from the sky and a massive amount of people suddenly vanish into thin air with no trace. Could it be the work of aliens? Or could it be the rapture?
Keene wastes no time delving into the good and the evil of humanity as the characters jouney deeper into the new world that lies before them and pulls it off with ease. There is also elements of Keene's pitch black humor which includes a small, but highly amusing, cameo by bizarro horror author Carlton Mellick III.
All in all TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME is classic Keene in all his glory and I highly recommend this and any of his work.

The story opens with the Rapture just having taken place. Everyone hears a loud trumpet-like noise and suddenly all hell breaks loose. Many people simply vanish while many more are left behind on Earth to fend for themselves in chaos. The main character is a Jewish man who is an unbeliever. He does not believe that the Rapture happened but rather some kind of terrorist attack, disaster, etc. He does not know what happened but cares only to survive and get home to his wife. He and his friends come across some truly horrific scenes that are brutal and terrifying. As evidence points more and more to The Rapture being the cause of the disaster which just happened on Earth he questions his faith in God and ponders why God would do something so horrible to his creation. Brian Keene mixes hardcore horror with religion and it works very well. He stops just shy of becoming preachy. I love Brian Keene's work because he brings more to the table than just a well-told horror story. He certainly knows how to deliver the goods in the horror department but he also gives you something to think about and I think that is the reason he is considered to be one of the best genre writers out there right now.
