As both a biographical and literary study, The Black Heart's Truth offers a detailed analysis of Howells' childhood and adolescence, his career as a fiction writer, his marriage, and his breakdowns. In his youth, Howells suffered from a variety of neurotic symptoms, including severe phobias, and he himself spoke of his ""morbid boyhood,"" which culminated in his first breakdown at the age of seventeen. Using a Freudian perspective, Crowley shows how the events of these early years influenced Howells' fiction.

I'd read several books about Aleister Crowley. He was a very weird guy and I always wanted to write a song about him. Aleister Crowley was branded the "Wickedest Man in the World," but what . Aleister Crowley fulfilled these conditions and Aleister is the Gaelic form of Alexander.

Aleister Crowley was branded the "Wickedest Man in the World," but what was really going in the mind of one of the world's most famous occultists? . I had read in some book or other that the most favorable name for becoming famous was one consisting of a dactyl followed by a spondee, as at the end of a hexameter: like Jeremy Taylor. To adopt it would satisfy my romantic ideals.

Aleister Crowley (/ˈæleɪstər ˈkroʊli/; born Edward Alexander Crowley; 12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947) was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist, and mountaineer. He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, he published widely over the course of his life.
